Since the beginning of 2016, the School Uniform Shop have supported a ‘Stella in Cambodia’ initiative by sponsoring 15 schools $250 each to create friendship bands. These bands are created by the kids who attend each of the 15 schools that are located across Cambodia and have been sold around the country by Stella and others.
All of the money raised from the friendship bands will go towards building a skills academy in Siem Reap, Cambodia for children and young adults to learn new skills they can use to get better jobs and ultimately improve their quality of life.
Stella from ‘Stella in Cambodia’ has been teaching the children how to make the bracelets and has been overseeing the whole process. The children are very excited to be making something which ultimately is going to help them in return. It is not often Cambodian children have the chance or money to help someone else, so by being good at making the bracelets they have a sense of achievement and fulfilment.
Stella says: ‘I’m running creative workshops to teach the school kids how to make friendship bracelets. It’s a lot of chaotic fun and boys are often better at it than girls! I then leave enough materials to make 1000 bracelets (4 to 6 bracelets per child) and then collect the bracelets and give the school $250 donated by School Uniform Shop [Hereford Rotary Club]. It’s a way the children’s family can help support the school and unlike a school fete or bake sale, it doesn’t cost them any money.’
